On the third day we went back to Keswick by bus, having decided to walk to the prehistoric Stone Circle at Castlerigg. Quiet, winding country lanes, vast open farm fields, plenty of sheep, stiles and swing gates later, we arrived at Castlerigg. We climbed over a stone stile set into one of those drystone walls that are famous in this part of the world to find ourselves close to a mini-Stonehenge.
The Stone Circle consists of 50 stones arranged in an inner rectangle and outer circle. It is believed to be around 3,000 to 4,000 years old, but its origins and function are shrouded in mystery. The Stone Circle itself is not particularly inspiring, though the view is.
Back in the barn by late afternoon, we spent the rest of the day lazing about by Crummock Water. Sitting on rocks, listening to the water lap around us, and watching a man close by us teaching his young daughter to row. I’ve seen some amazing sights in the Lake District, but sitting by Crummock Water was my favourite time!
