Review: The Torment of Others

If you’re a reader of crime fiction, you’re likely to have an impassioned opinion on the pair of Tony Hill and Carol Jordan. I doubt there is any fictional duo that has frustrated me quite as much as them. Yet, these two creations of Val McDermid’s fertile imagination has me going back again and again to the books.

I’ve been re-reading the books to review them for the site—unfortunately in random order. I start with The Torment of Others, a book that is indelibly printed in my memory for the ‘hideous insights’ (Daily Telegraph in their review of the book) into a mind so deviant that it keeps one awake at night.

That I’ve read Val McDermid’s The Torment of Others twice is a sterling testimony to my nerves. In short, it’s a horrifying story featuring stomach-churning violence and messed-up individuals, brought together in an edge-of-your-seat package by a veteran author.

The Torment of Others reunites cop Carol Jordan and clinical psychologist Tony Hill in an impossible quest. A deranged serial killer is going after prostitutes in the fictional English town of Bradfield, but here’s the twist—his signature is identical to a spate of killings for which a man has already been convicted. The case against Derek Tyler was cut and dried, and signed with unshakeable forensic evidence.

Moving to a new home

Even as I was making arrangements to get all my things transported from one city to the other, Writeside.net was also busy moving home. The formalities and technicalities are all complete now, and Writeside.net has moved in at Stablehost. It was recommended by Marie.

This was all a result of my old host, Ion Web, terminating services. It wasn’t all smooth, since I wasn’t informed of this and only found out when my site wouldn’t load. However, David of Ion Web was great, as usual, and helped me retrieve a full cPanel backup of my site. Subsequently, Stablehost were able to restore my site from it. I lost a couple of blog posts, but overall, everything else seems to be working fine. [UPDATE: Thanks to sweet and kind Niklas, all posts and comments have been retrieved and replaced.]

It is early days at Stablehost yet, but I’ve been very happy with the service and the response times. They were also forthcoming with responses before I purchased anything.

I’m quite sad about Ion Web shutting shop, though. I had over five years of happy and hassle-free hosting with them, and here’s hoping that Stablehost will be equally smooth sailing.

A refreshed WP 3.2

5 July 2011

WordPress 3.2Now you can compose your WordPress posts and pages on a blank screen without the distractions of a menu, buttons and so on. The fullscreen writing mode (or zen mode) is one of the new features of the recently released WordPress 3.2. Simply click on the Fullscreen button and watch as everything fades away, leaving you to just write. If you move your mouse towards the top of the window, basic interface elements to add/edit a link and image, save your post/page or exit fullscreen mode appear. You also get a word count at the bottom.

Other features of the new and improved WP include a redesigned Dashboard and admin bar, and plenty of under-the-hood tweaks that make WP lighter and faster on its feet.

Unless you’re using a really old version of WP, the upgrade should be available through your Dashboard. Just click on ‘Upgrade now’, sit back and let WP sort it out for you. To do it the hard way, you can download it from WordPress.org.

Writeside.net has already refreshed itself with WP 3.2. Have you?
